Multiple tragedies can exist at once, it’s always happening. But I’m going to be very frank and very honest here and you can unfollow me if it makes you feel some type of way
If you’re putting out your condolences to Robin Williams and his family, posting Aladdin tweets and photos and remaining quiet/willfully ignorant or unconcerned about what’s going on with Mike Brown and in Ferguson
I don’t know what to tell you, just log off and maybe think about some things.
It’s interesting to see white people who were loving the riots on the streets of Ukraine, the Arab spring and Gaza protests become “outraged” with the people of Ferguson.
Civil unrest is totally awesome when it’s far from home. Bless Trudy for putting it so succinctly in this tweet. I see y’all.
whoa whoa whoa.
The protests in Ukraine, Egypt, and Syria were all PEACEFUL until they got SHOT AT. Nobody shot at the people running into a general store to loot it.
This is the type of mindset I’m talking about. This is their concern, not actual Black life. The same white people lamenting looting were quiet in the days prior when the news broke of Michael Brown’s murder. The public execution of a teenager on the street wasn’t outrage worthy, but looting a convenience store is what draws their ire and makes them speak up. Just about every white person going on about looting was quiet about Michael Brown’s murder days prior. That’s interesting to say the least.
When there is civil unrest because of the extrajudicial murder of a Black teen on the street by the police and you’re talking about looters, you really need to question your humanity.
White people are acting as if the entire Ferguson community is looting. They want to conflate looters with the civil disobedience in response to the murder of Michael Brown. That’s beside the point anyway. I don’t give a damn about looters. So what? Whatever was taken from a store can be replaced. Stores also have insurance. The handful of looters are completely separate from protesters, but again, this is beside the point and is of no significance compared to the murder of Mike Brown. Only a deranged psychopath would be as perturbed about looted consumer goods as the execution of a Black teen on the street in broad daylight. White people are talking about looting more than an actual kid being executed and the justifiable anger of protesters. They aren’t supporting the protesters. They think the select few looters and protesters from an angry community are all the same. They are lending their support to inanimate objects being looted and property over an executed Black boy and the people rising for him. This is their priority and this is where their concern lies.
In the wake of a public execution by the police and the civil unrest that follows, white people like the above will mention looting first. An entire community is reeling over a teenager being executed on the street and they’re talking about looters. I’m surprised they didn’t toss in “two wrongs don’t make a right” or “violence is never the answer”. White people love saying things like that to justifiably angry Black people, as they champion uprisings everywhere else and the military industrial complex.
Let me reiterate so it can sink in; a kid was shot 10 times and summarily executed on the street in broad daylight by the police. His corpse was left there lying on that street in the summer heat for hours. His community is justifiably angry and in turn white people are talking about looters. I ask you, is this how a normal human acts? If you’re white and you aren’t this way, don’t send me a “not all whites are like this” message. Use this moment to see how your people act. Use this moment to reflect and challenge the white people in your communities who act like uncaring brutes towards Black death and suffering. Now is not the time to tell me you’re different and have empathy. I won’t acknowledge you for not being a barbarian.
Also, stop talking about things being peaceful until provocation elsewhere. The police tossed peace out the window when they executed Michael Brown. There would be no unrest if the police didn’t wantonly murder a Black teen. This started with grotesque violence and bloodshed at the hands of the police.
It’s quite telling where some white people’s outrage lies. Quite frankly, I’m surprised Black people haven’t set more cities across America ablaze. It speaks volumes about the restraint Black folks have. Lord knows white people don’t have it. White people lose their minds over mundane things. They will riot over bullshit. They flip over cars, start fires and destroy property over nonsense like hockey playoff games. Hell, thousands of white people rioted, flipped over news vans, started fires, vandalized and destroyed property, then had standoffs with the police over a pedophile enabling football coach being fired. So please, spare me your moral indignation over goddamn looters.
If you google ‘Eric Garner’ I guarantee you that almost every article by major media outlets will list some or all of the following: Garner’s height, weight, his (alleged) past criminal history, and that the police supposedly thought he was “illegally” selling cigarettes. And all this information will be in the first few paragraphs.
Here’s what most corporate news outlets won’t make so readily available (you may have to dig for it): precisely how many officers ganged up on Garner, their complete police histories, any crimes they may have committed in their personal lives, and not even the names of all the involved officers are listed. And you may or may not have read that Garner clearly said he couldn’t breathe at least six times, and that multiple witnesses said Garner had just arrived on scene and broken up an altercation.
The media is hardly objective and they begin covering for the police and victimizing the victim very early on. These lopsided “facts” and seemingly minor omissions is only the beginning. Wait until it goes to court. Then you won’t believe how much news outlets, the police and defense attorneys will demonize Mr. Garner.
Unless you’re Black. Then this is an all too familiar pattern.”
From Emmett Till to Rodney King to The Central Park Five to Oscar Grant to Amadou Diallo to Sean Bell to Trayvon Martin to Renisha McBride to Jonathan Ferrell to Jordan Davis to Eric Garner and so very many others…even though we’re always unarmed, there is never a shortage of disproportionately White juries eager to conclude that the act of merely existing while Black is always sufficient justification for inflicting brutality, imprisonment or murder onto any unfamiliar Black bodies
Seems like it’s always the same old song and dance whenever Black people seek justice from the system made to imprison us: Criminalizing Blackness — White people may commit crimes, but Black people are always viewed as criminals.
I thought this was from the civil rights era because it was in black and white. But then again what really changed.
i often wonder how much i’m willing to sacrifice for a struggle that actively seeks to ignore the deaths of women and girls like me.
whites could hear another white person say out loud “I’m gonna shoot you cause you’re black”, see em proceed to shoot a black person cus they’re black and still defend white’s general innocence as a people over the fact that a racist murder took place
